Five Things - Getting to Know the District's Newest Administrators

SPUSD is delighted to welcome four new District administrators to our team. In case you haven’t had a chance to meet Dana Smith, Dave Lubs, Tim Mawhinney, or Dennis Lefevre, here’s a brief introduction. Dana and Dave are the Director of Fiscal Services and the Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, respectively. Tim is the Director of Facilities and Maintenance, and Dr. Dennis you may have seen around the District in his previous capacity as District Psychologist.



Dave was appointed to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Business Services on September 2nd. He has worked as a history teacher, a middle school assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent. Dave earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at UC San Diego, and his MBA at UCLA. Five things you’ll want to know about Dave:


1. Can live on SportsCenter and CNN only

2. Admits that he “married up” and his wife is out of his league

3. Was a three-sport athlete in high school (football, baseball and basketball)

4. Loves Mountain Dew

5. Ran with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain




Dana began on June 2nd, as Director of Fiscal Services, bringing over 12 years of experience working in school district business. She is a proud graduate of the University of LaVerne, where she earned her Bachelor of Science and MBA degrees. In addition, Dana is a certified CPA. Here are five things that give you a sense of who Dana is:

1. Is the oldest of three siblings

2. Enjoys reading cook books and learning about health

3. Has 45 first cousins on one side of her family

4. Graduated Magna Cum Laude from college

5. Would buy her parents and siblings a family vacation home if she ever won the lottery




Dr. Dennis has been a psychologist at SPUSD schools since 2012, and took over as Executive Director of Student Services on August 13. He received his Master of Arts and Doctorate of Psychology degrees in School Psychology and Educational Psychology, respectively, from the California School of Professional Psychology. You can get a better sense of Dennis through these five things:


1. Has two Jack Russell Terriers, Rocket and Sparky

2. Tends to hoard brown paper shopping bags

3. Studied to be a history professor at the University of Virginia, and a cinematographer at UCLA

4. Drives a VW Jetta Sportswagon, but it’s not really all that “sporty”

5. Likes to ride bikes and pickle vegetables, but not at the same time.




Tim began as Director of Facilities and Maintenance on June 30th. He has been building school facilities for 25 years as a construction management consultant, having come up through the ranks. Tim earned his Bachelor in Business Administration from Loyola Marymount University.  Five things he shares are:


1. He’s ‘Living the American Dream’

2. Happily married for 31 years and enjoying the empty nest (Tim’s two grown daughters have left home, and the door locks have been changed)

3. Has one happy, healthy nine-month-old grandchild with Tim’s name as his middle name

4. Owns a house with two cars that fit in the garage

5.  A "rad" mountain bike and a truck to cart it around on weekends.  A half dozen great single tracks within 20 minutes of my house.  What more could I ask for?
