SOUTH PASADENA – At its November 18, 2014 regularly scheduled meeting, the South Pasadena Unified School District’s Board of Education was presented with the results of an independent financial analysis conducted by School Services of California, Inc. (SSC), one of the state’s premier independent agencies on school finance. SSC CEO Ron Bennett’s presentation to the Board was akin to a budget review, with examinations that included enrollment, budget assumptions from the State, one-time sources of funds, federal revenues, fund balances, multi-year projections, and expenditures. In particular, SSC spent significant time analyzing expenditures, as they can “…tell you a lot about your priorities,” according to Mr. Bennett.
Dr. Geoff Yantz, SPUSD Superintendent, stated, “The purpose of SSC's analysis [is] to provide an independent review of the district's budget…the independent analysis was an important step to provide all parties the needed confidence in the budget.” Dr. Yantz went on to say, “[Mr. Bennett] spoke of needed interventions to reduce the operating budget deficit which, in my opinion, includes energy savings, parcel taxes, and property rentals, among others.”
