Board of Education Approves Implementation of Dual Immersion Language Program

SOUTH PASADENAAt its January 6, 2015 regularly scheduled meeting, the South Pasadena Unified School District’s Board of Education approved the implementation of a Dual Immersion Language program. Dr. Steve Seaford, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services, recommended that the Board approve a Spanish Dual Immersion Language program beginning in Kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year, and a Mandarin Dual Immersion Language program beginning in Kindergarten for the 2016-2017 school year.  “Based on the depth and quality of research and staff leadership,” Dr. Seaford stated, “I am very confident that our dual immersion program will succeed, and most importantly, our students will thrive.”

Program details were presented by District Superintendent Dr. Geoff Yantz, Dr. Steve Seaford, Principal of Monterey Hills Elementary School, Dr. Laurie Narro, and Dual Immersion Coordinator, Mrs. Katy K. Nielsen.  Among the topics presented were background information, cost analysis, design models, and research which included community surveys, site visitations, and workshop attendances.  Data from community surveys found 901 out of 1,078 (83.58%) would like their children to learn to read, write, and speak a second language.  The languages preferred by the community were Spanish and Mandarin.

Michelle C. Kim, a South Pasadena resident and mother of two young children states, “We enthusiastically support the District's decision to implement dual language immersion programs in Spanish and Mandarin.  We applaud the District's commitment to providing a quality education to our children and to preparing them to excel in an increasingly interconnected global community.”

Parents interested in learning more about the Kindergarten Spanish Dual Immersion program are invited to attend a Parent Information Meeting scheduled for February 2015.  Registration for the 2015-2016 school year will take place during Kindergarten registration in March and April 2015.
