SOUTH PASADENA – The phrase “It’s business as usual at SPHS” refers to the business-oriented classes and clubs that are excelling in creativity and regional competitions. Three High School Virtual Business teams competed at the State competition in Bakersfield: Orbis (a composting/worm company), Inventor (an electronics component company), and the varsity team, Walden (selling micro-houses), and between them earned awards in most categories. Walden’s business plan came in 5th Place and earned another spot in New York City in April for the international competition.
During the first Academic Decathlon scrimmage of the season, Mr. Oliver Valcorza and twenty-one students from SPHS’s Academic Decathlon team set a new all-time record. They took 61 out of 68 awards and are now unofficially placed at 7th out of over 1,200 schools across the United States, Britain, and China. In California, the team is currently rank 4th, behind the three powerhouses that traditionally dominate the competition. Final standings will be announced at the February 12th Los Angeles County Office of Education Academic Decathlon Awards Banquet.
