During its April 21st meeting, the Board of Education voted unanimously to name the South Pasadena Middle School’s newly-renovated music room after retired music teacher, James Macomber. Mr. Macomber began his teaching career at South Pasadena Middle School in 1981, and spent 31 years working with students there and at the three elementary schools.
Since the completion of the music room, Administration and members of the Governing Board received numerous requests to name the new music room after former teacher Mr. Macomber.
“Mr. Macomber instilled a love of music in my son that he pursued through four years of band at the high school,” one parent’s email stated. “My son was not what you would have called a great student and band was the only thing I believe that got him through high school. If not for Mr. Macomber planting that the seed of music in him, I shudder to think what my son’s outcome would have been. I will be eternally grateful to Mr. Macomber...”
Another said, “Through his skilled teaching, Mr. Macomber was able to instill such a love of music in my children that they all continued to be in band and/or orchestra all the way through high school at SPHS. My oldest developed such a love for music that she earned a college degree in Music Industry, and now works in the industry in Hollywood at a music talent agency. I give Mr. Macomber credit for starting each of my kids on a music appreciation track that will bring lifelong joy.”
A committee of teachers, administrators, and parents met, at which time the committee recommended displaying embossed letters above the interior entrance to the music room – “James Macomber Music Room.” A ceremony commemorating the naming of the music room is planned for June, prior to the final musical concert for the school year.
